The Curator’s Note:

There is something fascinating about ordinary, forgotten things. While other artists of the time aimed for perfect illusions, John Peto focused on memories. I chose Office Board for The Graphic Archive because it is a "rack" picture that acts like a visual biography. If you look closely at the postcard and envelope, you’ll see they are addressed to Dr. Bernard Goldberg, a Philadelphia chiropodist and Peto’s neighbour. This is more than simply a painting; it is a neighbourly commission, a mix of frayed strings and worn notes that turn a flat surface into something that feels full of life. It encourages you to take a moment and notice the "small details" in your own day, maybe as you drink your morning coffee.
Provenance: Sourced from the Met Open Access Archive, these graphic works represent pivotal moments in art history, bringing museum-grade archival prints into your daily ritual.

The Details

  • The Style: Unlike the high-gloss realism of his contemporaries, Peto focused on the "artifice of the eye," emphasising the gritty, tactile textures of weathered wood and paper.
  • Artist: John Frederick Peto (American, 1854–1907)

  • The Original: Office Board (1885), a cornerstone of rack-painting realism, celebrated for its complex textures and moody, intellectual composition.

  • The Vessel: Available in both 11oz and 15oz premium ceramic. Weighted for a comfortable hold, the high-definition print preserves the gritty textures of the weathered wood and the delicate ink of the vintage letters.
