The Curator's Note:
This is pure 19th-century American opulence. Roesen was known for these “more is more” compositions. I picked this one because of the sheer variety—it’s a feast of detail. It’s the kind of image where you see something new every time you take a sip: a hidden grape, a tiny dewdrop, a specific curve of a leaf. It’s a maximalist’s dream.
Severin Roesen believed in the idea of the immeasurable. As a German immigrant who left during the 1848 revolutions to find new opportunities in America, he created art rich in 19th-century style. I chose this piece for The Floral Gallery because it’s a true visual celebration, showing more than a dozen kinds of fruit and flowers. There’s even a tropical pineapple and a bursting pomegranate, both symbols of the nation’s future abundance. Every time you look, you notice something different—a hidden grape, a tiny drop of dew, or the arc of a leaf that hints at an endless harvest.
Provenance: This design features high-resolution imagery sourced from the Met Open Access Archive, selected for its historical accuracy and timeless natural beauty.
The Details:
- Mastery: Roesen’s skill shows in how he turns chaos into a balanced, striking scene. His style was defined by the Scientific Revolution, so his paintings are precise, clear, and boldly colourful. We sourced this image from the Met Open Access Archive to keep its vivid, high-contrast colours, just as they once impressed Pennsylvania’s lumber barons. Now, the 'Golden Abundance' of the 1850s can feel just as lively on your desk today.
-
Artist: Severin Roesen (American, born Germany, ca. 1815–ca 1872)
-
The Original: Still Life: Flowers and Fruit, 1848. A lavish example of American Victorian maximalism and botanical variety.
- The Symbolism: The inclusion of exotic fruits like the pineapple alludes to the rapid improvements in 19th-century cultivation and the perceived abundance of American resources.
-
The Vessel: 11oz or 15oz premium ceramic. Designed to showcase the immense level of detail, from the curve of the grapes to the dew on the leaves.
Preserving the Masterpiece
To ensure the striking pigments of the Floral Gallery remain just as vivid as the day they were painted, we recommend the following care for your vessel:
- The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to preserve the fine details of the brush marks over time.
- The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe for your daily rituals.
- Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the archival-quality finish.
