The Curator’s Note
I’ve always been drawn to how Jusepe de Ribera handles light—he doesn't just paint a scene; he directs it like a filmmaker. In this study of the Holy Family, the shadows are just as important as the subjects themselves. Jusepe de Ribera, known as Lo Spagnoletto ("The Little Spaniard"), made a huge impact on art. He didn’t just paint light; he shaped it from darkness. In this 1648 masterpiece, notice how the "tenebrism," or strong contrast of light and shade, creates a powerful sense of intimacy. Unlike the idealised figures of the High Renaissance, Ribera’s Holy Family feels real, tangible, and brimming with feeling.
I selected this piece for the Midnight Series because of that masterful Baroque tension. It’s a deep, soulful image where the darkness feels thick, and the light feels earned. It is a handheld piece of history that feels especially right when the house is quiet, and the rest of the world is still asleep.
Provenance: Every piece in this collection is digitally restored from the Met Open Access Archive, ensuring that world-class history is preserved in every sip.
The Details
- The Mastery: Ribera was a leader in Naturalism. He chose real people from the streets of Naples as models for his saints, giving this piece an earthy, grounded feeling that makes it unique in classical art.
- The Arabesque of Shadow: Like the Ryder piece, this painting uses a "chiaroscuro" (light-dark) balance to draw your eye to the light connection between the figures, while the rest fades into the mystery of the dark.
-
Artist: Jusepe de Ribera (Spanish, 1591–1652)
-
The Original: The Holy Family with Saints Anne and Catherine of Alexandria, 1648. A masterful display of Spanish Baroque naturalism and "tenebrism" (shadow-heavy style).
-
The Vessel: 15oz premium ceramic. Captures the high-contrast lighting and rich textures of the original oil-on-canvas masterpiece.
Preserving the Masterpiece
To ensure the intricate floral details and the legendary silhouette of the Unicorn remain as vivid as the original threads, we recommend the following care:
- The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to protect the archival-quality print and the depth of the midnight tones.
- The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe, fitting seamlessly into your modern rituals.
- Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the "Sacred Mystery" of the tapestry’s finish over time.
