The Curator’s Note:
While Hiroshige focused on the atmospheric drama of a storm, his rival Katsushika Hokusai took a more cinematic, modern approach. In Shower at the New Yanagi Bridge, Hokusai uses a rare horizontal perspective to "zoom in" on the human experience of the rain—specifically the graphic silhouette of the umbrella. It offers a fascinating counterpoint to Hiroshige’s Passing Rain; where Hiroshige shows the scale of the city, Hokusai shows the geometry of the moment. It is a masterclass in how artists use different line weights to evoke the same feeling of a sudden summer downpour.
Provenance: Sourced from the Met Open Access Archive, these graphic works represent pivotal moments in art history, bringing museum-grade archival prints into your daily ritual.
The Details
- Mastery: Hokusai’s mastery in this early work comes from blending his "Nanga" (literati) influence with a new Western perspective. He lowered the horizon and used lines that receded along the bridge to create a sense of depth, a pathbreaking technique in 1806. By using the Met Open Access Archive, we have kept the delicate "bokashi" (ink fading) in the sky, and the sharp, rhythmic lines of the rain, making the original woodblock’s cinematic intimacy clear on the ceramic surface.

Preserving the Masterpiece (Consistent Care)
To ensure the sharp lines and atmospheric tones of the Graphic Archive remain just as vivid as the day they were pressed, we recommend the following care for your vessel:
-
The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to preserve the delicate linear details over time.
-
The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe for your daily rituals.
-
Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the archival-quality finish and the clarity of the graphic work.
