The Curator’s Note
The Details
- The Haptic Light: Vermeer's real talent here is his "haptic" style, which lets you almost feel textures just by looking. Notice the difference between the cold, heavy gilt silver basin and the light, crisp linen of her kerchief. By choosing this work from the Met Open Access Archive, we have kept those tiny details, so you can see the artist's careful "pointillé" dots of light each time you reach for the handle.
-
Artist: Johannes Vermeer (Dutch, 1632–1675)
-
The Original: Young Woman with a Water Pitcher, ca. 1662. Notably, it is the first Vermeer to enter an American collection, and it is a masterclass in domestic tranquillity and the play of light on linen and metal.
-
The Vessel: 11oz or 15oz premium ceramic. The deep, tonal black of the mug provides a sophisticated contrast to the cool blues and warm ochres of the painting, making the window’s glow feel even more luminous.
Preserving the Masterpiece
To ensure the subtle "pointillé" (dots of light) and the soft gradients of the Dutch interior remain as crisp as the original oil on canvas, we recommend the following care:
-
The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to protect the archival-quality print and the depth of the midnight tones.
-
The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe, designed to be a functional part of your quietest moments.
-
Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the "Interior Silence" of the finish over time.
