The Curator's Note
Another “hidden” gem from the archives. Catharina Peeters was a pioneer in European still life, reclaiming the genre at a time when women could not formally study the human figure. I chose this piece for The Floral Gallery because of its strong, almost architectural quality. Peeters did more than paint flowers; she constructed them. Notice the "imperfections" she added, like a drooping tulip, a small insect bite, or a single dewdrop. These details act as reminders of memento mori, or the momentary nature of life. By carving her signature into the stone ledge beside a fallen sprig of forget-me-nots, she made sure her legacy would not be forgotten in a world where women artists were often ignored.
Provenance: This design features high-resolution imagery sourced from the Met Open Access Archive, selected for its historical accuracy and timeless natural beauty.
The Details
- Mastery: Peeters’ skill stems from her keen observation, a style that emerged from the meeting of art and science in the 1600s. Instead of the softer, more romantic bouquets that came later, she used clear lines and precise, lifelike detail. Thanks to the Met Open Access Archive, we can see the tiny textures of the insect-bitten leaves and the clear look of the dewdrops, so you can enjoy the careful beauty of her brushwork every time you see it.
-
Artist: Catharina Peeters (Flemish, active ca. 1657–1664)
-
The Original: A Bouquet of Flowers, 17th Century. A rare work that bridges the gap between fine art and the botanical illustrations of the Scientific Revolution.
- The Symbolism: Features dewdrops and decaying petals that symbolise the fleeting nature of beauty, juxtaposed with the permanence of her signature in stone.
-
The Vessel: 11oz or 15oz premium ceramic. Weighted for a solid, premium feel that matches the sturdy elegance of the artwork.
Preserving the Masterpiece
To ensure the striking pigments of the Floral Gallery remain just as vivid as the day they were painted, we recommend the following care for your 15oz vessel:
- The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to preserve the fine details of the brush marks over time.
- The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe for your daily rituals.
- Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the archival-quality finish.
