The Curator's Note:
Most people think of Caillebotte for his rainy Paris streets, but I fell in love with how he handled these flowers. They aren’t “polite” garden blooms; they are a tangled, messy, wonderful explosion of texture. It feels more modern than 1893. On a mug, the pattern becomes almost abstract—a swirl of garden energy to wake up to.
Most people think of Gustave Caillebotte as the painter of rainy Paris streets, but his real retreat was his garden at Petit-Gennevilliers. I love these Chrysanthemums because they aren’t "polite" garden flowers. Instead, they burst with messy, wonderful texture. Painted in 1893, this close-up shows how 19th-century French artists were fascinated by East Asian style. I picked this for The Floral Gallery because the pattern feels modern and immersive. Caillebotte originally designed it as part of a decorative series for his dining room doors, similar to Monet’s water lilies. On this vessel, that "tangle of petals" turns into a swirl of garden energy that wakes you up.
Provenance: This design features high-resolution imagery sourced from the Met Open Access Archive, selected for its historical accuracy and timeless natural beauty.
The Details
- Mastery: Caillebotte’s skill in this painting comes from his "unusual, close-up view." By leaving out the horizon and filling the space with blossoms, he moved away from traditional landscapes and focused on decoration. This new perspective was groundbreaking. It makes you feel the "resplendent colours" as if you are surrounded by them, not just looking from afar. We sourced this from the Met Open Access Archive, so the thick, rhythmic brushwork that connects Impressionism and modern abstraction is still clear.
-
Artist: Gustave Caillebotte (French, 1848–1894)
-
The Original: Chrysanthemum in the Garden Petit- Gennevilliers, c. 1893. An impressionist study focusing on the wild, untamed texture of autumn blooms.
- The Inspiration: Heavily influenced by "Japonisme" and the resplendent colours celebrated in East Asian art, this work was intended to turn a functional space into a floral bower.
-
The Vessel: 11oz or 15oz premium ceramic. Selected for its ability to render the deep, saturated contrast of Caillebotte’s garden palette.
Preserving the Masterpiece
To ensure the striking pigments of the Floral Gallery remain just as vivid as the day they were painted, we recommend the following care for your 15oz vessel:
- The Tender Touch: While our ceramic is premium and durable, we recommend hand-washing with a soft sponge and mild soap to preserve the fine details of the brush marks over time.
- The Modern Ease: Your mug is dishwasher-safe (top rack recommended) and microwave-safe for your daily rituals.
- Temperature & Grace: Avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemical cleaners, which may dull the archival-quality finish.
